The largest feature release yet

Wondering what’s new around redmark? Well, we’ve been hard at work bringing your most requested features to reality. And here we have them:

Project Tags / Grouping

This is a very powerful feature letting you organize your projects in a number of ways. Here’s how to use it:

Creating and applying tags

tags1and2

1) On your projects list, click on ‘+ create new tag’ in the new ‘tags’ bar
2) Fill-in the name of the tag and click Ok. You can also pick a color that distinguishes this tag from the others.
3) Now the tag will appear in the tags bar

s

4) To apply it to any project, either: (A) Drag the tag on top of a project or (B) Open the Edit Project Menu and select the tags that apply to the given project

Browsing by tags
Make special look-ups by any combination of tags. Want to see which projects fall under a given tag/category. Just select the tags from the tags bar and the list on the right will be filtered immediately.

Select one or more tags to filter out the projects list

Usages:

  • Group projects related to the same design:
If you do web design it is common to produce separate designs for the home page and internal pages. Or maybe you are showing multiple sides of a box. In any case, your life would become much easier if you can group those projects in the same location as they really belong to one piece of work. Now it’s possible - just create a tag for the design and add all relevant projects to it.
  • Group projects related to the same client:
If you do multiple projects per client and on top of that have multiple clients, it is easy to get lost on a long project list page. Grouping lets you focus your attention only on what’s relevant.
  • Group projects by more than 1 parameter:
Imagine your projects go in phases and for each phase you start over. Create a tag for each phase and you’re done. But at the same time you also want to group projects by client. That’s not a problem, just drag both the phase and the client tags to a project to have it marked with both. This also lets you later see ‘all phase 2 projects for client A’.
.

Comments on Comments (Threaded Discussion)

Discuss your client requests in a thread before accepting them! Things are often unclear and many of you asked for the ability to have a conversation focused around each single point request. Now it’s possible and really easy to use:

Click on reply and type your message or click on any message to open it up.

Click on reply and type your message or click on any message to open it up.

Want to delete a whole thread - click on the delete button of the first message and you will prompted to delete either the thread or the given message.

.

Client-initiated Uploads

Does your client want to show you an example of what design they like? Does it ever happen that they have something very specific in mind and have a picture that precisely exemplifies it? Instead of having to receive those via e-mail, now you can let your clients show you relevant images directly in your project:
Each client will now see an additional icon in their versions list entitled ‘new upload’. When they click it they can upload a new image just in the same way as the designer can.

Client-initiated Uploads

Client uploaded images will appear with a special ribbon on top of them marking them as ‘client' so that they are not confused with new versions of the design uploaded by the designer.

.

Copy&Paste Client URLs

Ever needed to give your clients the URL where they can see the image personally instead of using redmark’s automated mailer? Click on ‘Send to Client’ and a new menu will appear letting you either use the automated e-mail feature or see the URLs on screen.

Visual markup now available: the pencil

Pencil

Brand New!

Here’s a pencil for everyone. Draw markup of any shape directly on any part of the design. It works just like pointing to a single location, but now you can point out more!

A few examples of what you can do now that you couldn’t do before:

  • Point out an area
No more need to describe parts of the image when you want to comment about all of them at once.

Highlighting a rectangular region is really easy

The pencil will also work for any other shape!

    .
  • Exemplify a shape
Want a sharper shape, but not too sharp? Sometimes it is easier to just draw.

Take the pencil and quickly make a rough example of what you have in mind - instead of wonder how to describe it.

    .
  • Not all markup is the same
Want to denote certain areas of markup as positive and others as “needs improvement”? Now you can:

Place a tick-mark for feedback that does not need work, and use the point for areas in need of improvement.

Place a tick-mark for feedback that does not need work, and use the point for areas in need of improvement.

Where are the “red marks”?
That question was posed on the redmark customer feedback forum awhile ago, by a user asking for more ways to do visual markup. We took that seriously and discussed a multitude of options including highlighting, drawing various shapes like rectangles, ellipses, polygons and plain pencil markup. Always valuing the opinion of the customer, we quickly surveyed current members and interviewed friends in the graphic design community. Here you see the result.

New Features Released

You spoke - we listened. Thanks to all who left us feedback using the red tab on the right side of each page. We take your opinion very seriously! Here’s what we did:

  • Designers can now comment too
An effective design discussion involves both sides. Now designers can insert comments onto an image just like clients could before.

    Two-way Communication
The designer’s comments appear on gray notes, while the client’s comments appear on red notes making it easier to distinguish the two. The name of the commenter will appear in the title on all new comments inserted beginning this week

  • Comments saved immediately upon entry
Previously, the client had to click on “Send Feedback” before their comments were saved and the designer was notified. Some people didn’t figure this out and lost their comments. To prevent this from happening and make the process safer, comments are now saved immediately upon entry using AJAX technology. The new “Send Feedback” and “Sent to Client” buttons serve only to trigger the notification e-mail that the other person should read the comments.

  • Multi-language text entry now supported
As redmark gained popularity in non-English speaking countries the need to support text-entry into non-English alphabets suddenly appeared. On your request, our system is now Unicode-compliant meaning that you can enter text in any alphabet you desire to use.

This is just the beginning - if there is anything that you would like to see in redmark - just say it. The more feedback we get, the better. We aim to make redmark the most useful tool for visual collaboration and will work together with you to achieve this goal.

Thanks for your support!

redmark to participate in the Stanford Cool Product Expo!

We are very excited to participate in the Stanford Cool Product Expo (CPX). The CPX is one of the largest student-organized events at Stanford and wants to generate excitement about cool products. This year it features 51 exhibitors ranging from 23andMe to Evernote to NeuroSky. You can check out the full list at cpx.stanford.edu. Redmark is honored to be part of the exhibition.

To showcase our tool, we are releasing the Feedback Gallery – a gallery that features images of products, services, and companies that are exhibiting at the CPX. Visitors will be able to rave (or rant :) about their favorites through our simple commenting interface. Anybody interested can check out the comments at http://www.redmarkit.com/cpx/.

We look forward to an exciting day and wish luck to all exhibitors. Drop by and say hi if you are in the area – the event is free and open to the public. Here are the logistics:

What: Stanford Cool Product Expo
When: Wednesday, April 08, 12-6pm
Where: Stanford Arrillaga Alumni Center
Come say hi to redmark at table #33

Update:

Wow, that was an amazing Expo. Lots of amazing companies, hundreds of visitors, great organization! Thank you again to the organizers (Tom, Laura, Joe, Amanda - I hope I am not missing anyone) and to everyone who came to say hi to redmark.

Big thanks to Luke Stewart as well for helping me man our table. We ended up forgoing the Feedback Gallery as people were really interested in checking out redmark itself.

Why redmark?

redmark wants to revolutionalize the way designers and clients interact. In our 10 years of experience, discussing concepts over e-mail never quite cut it. Inaccurate text-based feedback results in prolonged projects, higher costs, and frustration for both clients and designers. What’s more, the lack of a simple and useful tool for reviewing creative content is staggering in today’s Web-centered world.

Enter redmark. redmark is the easiest way to collaborate on a design. Designers simply upload their projects and clients automatically receive an e-mail each time a new revision is added. Giving visual feedback takes a simple click, with redmark automatically taking care of notifying the designer about the clients’ comments.

Today, redmark is still in beta and we are actively working on adding features and ironing out last details. But our goal has been clear from day one: create an application which “just works” for designers and their clients.

And to do that successfully, we want to engage YOU. Please leave us some feedback, or e-mail us, or tweet us. We are listening!

Ultimately, redmark wants to become a useful tool in every designer’s creative arsenal. But instead of charging an obscene amount of money, redmark will remain free for the individual designer. Why? Because we believe that creating value for designers opens the door for much more interesting ways to sustain the tool and make a small profit. Stay tuned for more on this topic!

Thanks for reading!

Hey redmark users!

Welcome to the redmark blog! Redmark wants to make visual feedback easy together with you! We are starting this blog to reach out to all interested designers and clients. Here’s what you can do here:

  • Get the latest product updates
We are constantly extending redmark with new functionality, after taking your suggestions into consideration. When we are ready to send something cool your way, you’ll know it here.
  • Opinionated? Tell us what you think
We are interested in working with a small group of people to determine exactly how they use redmark. If you want to make a stronger impact on the future of redmark, watch out for announcements for interview sessions and usability tests that you can take part in.

Like the direction we are taking? Let us know by leaving a comment and suggestions!

Good luck on your projects!
